I have always believed in preserving history. This is why my attic is literally bulging with momentos of the past which are just junk to most people.
When I married into the CARTER family in 1942, I began collecting genealogical data, planning to have my findings published at some time in the future.

After learning that the Carter ancestors come from Chester County, South Carolina, my husband and I made several trips to that county for research purposes. We have always found the personnel in the various offices of the courthouse there to be very cooperative. In a library next door to the courthouse we found a South Carolina Room which is well stocked with materials for genealogical research. We have searched through dusty basements of old courthouses, crawled over barbed wire fences to abandoned cemeteries and braved all sorts of dangers just to get another birth date. We have scanned through hundreds of volumes consisting of early marriage, deed, will and birth records.

Most importantly, I sought the aid of many persons who were most willing to share their knowledge as well as their bible records with me. I wrote hundreds of letters which were answered promptly and completely. My book would have been so much more complete if all had answered but unfortunately some lines must be omitted.

I want to thank all the people who shared with me and contributed to the completion of this genealogical history. During the course off researching this book, I have found many relatives I did not know existed and made "pen pals" of them. I have learned that our family consists of people from all walks of life and that they are good people. If ALEXANDER CARTER could, by some miracle, return today and see how his descendants have multiplied and prospered he would be very pleased.

A challenge to future genealogist remains open. The father and other predecessors of ALEXANDER CARTER are still unknown.

A note from the author of this web page:
I have added additions to the research of Clella Mae Carter and do hope everyone out there will help continue this fine womans research.
