THOMAS CARTER was the son of ALEXANDER and ANNA CARTER of Chester County, South Carolina. He was born in Virginia on March 15, 1766 and was probably the first born of his father's family.

Thomas married NANCY NEWTON early in life and she became the mother of all his children. Their children were: JOHN RUFUS, SARAH HART, ALEXANDER, HENRY NEWTON, ROBERT N., THOMAS, ELIZABETH, and JESSE HUMPHRIES. THOMAS died young.

After NANCY NEWTON's death, THOMAS married RUTHA LEDSINGER, a widow with three children. Two of RUTHA's daughters married two of THOMAS' sons. MARY LEDSINGER married ALEXANDER CARTER and ELIZABETH LEDSINGER married ROBERT  N. CARTER. RUTHA also had a son named GEORGE LEDSINGER.

THOMAS and RUTHA CARTER with all of their children and grandchildren emigrated to Carroll County, Tennessee around 1830. They were included in the 1830 census of Carroll County. Most of them settled in the fifth District and reared their families there.

On March 14, 1831 THOMAS and RUTHA purchased 276 acres of land for the sum of $828. This land purchased from JOHN WOODS was situated in the second range and second section of the Twelfth Surveyor's District on the waters of the Obion River.

When THOMAS and his family arrived in Carroll County, there were no churches in the vicinity. They immediately began to make plans for building a church. JESSE HUMPHRIES CARTER, THOMAS' son, had purchased land in the fifth district and in June of 1844 deeded one acre to the Trustees of Carter's Chapel Meeting House for the purpose of building a church. History of the church

THOMAS died on October 15, 1842 at the age of 76 and his wife RUTHA, died in the summer of 1854. They were both buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery in unmarked graves.

Very little is known about three of THOMAS's children. JOHN RUFUS CARTER married MARY HINES. They moved to Gentry County, Missouri where I could not locate any of their descendants.

ELIZABETH MINSKIPE CARTER, THOMAS and NANCY NEWTON's daughter, married ELIAS CARTER and also moved with her family to Gentry County, Missouri. Of them very little is known.

THOMAS CARTER's other daughter, SARAH HART married ROBERT REEVES. Very little is known about their family.
