The Carter Family

These are Rhoda Carter's own written words
We put this here so that she may always be remembered
1839-1930
John Rufus Carter married Mary Hines. They had two girls and two boys, Isula and Lula and Lonnie and Newton. They live in Missouri. Tommie the youngest of Thomas Carter's children died young, and Elizabeth his daughter married Elias Carter. They had seven children, one girl and six boys. Tommie and Sallie, the two oldest, died young man and young woman soon after coming to Tennessee. Their other sons were Avery Hum and Nervy Newton and Alexander and James and Madison. They all went to Missouri, only Avery, who lived in Tenn. his entire life. He had one son and one daughter, James and Minnie. She married but James never married. He lived with his father a few miles west of Trenton. That is about all I can tell about the family, only Alexander died after they moved to Missouri. Thomas Carter's other daughter Sarah Hart married Robert Reeves. They had two children, Jane and Salona. James oldest son was named John. I do not know the rest of their names as they left Tennessee. Salona never had any children. Robert and Sarah Reeves never stayed long in one place. He had a roving disposition. After they got very old they went to Mississippi to his son and died there. This is all of Thomas Carter's children married in South Carolina and their mother Nancy Newton died out there and then the father married Rutha ledsinger, the widow of Mike Ledsinger and the mother of Mary and Elizabeth Carter, the wives of Alex and Bob Carter. She also had one son.

Will write a little sketch of him as he was so closely connected with the Carter family. He married Nancy Harpley, and they raised four sons and seven daughters. The sons were John, Mike, Thomas and James. He died in the Federal Army in time of the Civil War. His youngest son Louis, died near Huntingdon a few years ago. His daughters were Ruth Jackson Collins, Margaret P. Hall, Mary William Jackson, Sallie Nelson Collins. These are still living, but they are very old. Louis I don't know much about the man she married, he never lived about here and she died. Carolina John Allman and Izabella Sanders of Huntingdon. This is Thomas and Rutha Ledsinger's family.

As far as I can tell there were two of Thomas Carter's brothers came to Tennessee. John and Ruben Carter. John had two sons and three daughters. William Kidd Carter. He was named for a man that was some connection of the Carter's. I don't know what kin he was, but his name was William Kid. He got his hair shot off by the Tories in the Revolutionary War. He died in Mississippi since I can remember. William Kid Carter had two sons in Dyer County, James Ford Carter and Johnathan David Carter (always called Tobie).

John Carter's other son was Jonathan. He had two sons in North Arkansas, the last account. Their names were Filmore and Ethelbert. and they had a sister in Dexter, Arkansas. John Carter had three girls. Nican married John Kee, Tabitha Dunning and Elizabeth Arch Montgomery. This is all I know about them.

Ruben Carter had one son and four daughters. His sons name was Ruben Ellis. He married Susan Herron, they raised seven sons. Calvin died when he was about 35. Ruben Major died in Huntingdon some years ago. Emmaline Carter of Huntingdon his widow. John W. Carter of McLemoresville and  James H. Carter near Griggs Chapel and Bishop Thomas C. Carter of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Dr. Joseph M. Carter of Arkansas and Jesse Carter who died in Huntingdon some years ago.
