1839-1930

I will try to tell what I can about the Carter Family. The first account I have of them they lived in Virginia and North Carolina, right on the line between the two states. They then moved to South Carolina near Chester. They were a very hard working family of people. Farming was their occupation. Their religion was the old Methodist faith, and I never heard of any of the old ones ever drinking or gambling or anything of the kind.

They believed in education, tried to give their children as good an education as was common in those days, and have never heard of a Carter but that they could read an write, without the exception of a few that was not sane enough to be taught.

The Carter's politics was Whigs in time of the Revolutionary War, and on until the Civil War, then they were Union men, and now they are Republicans mostly.

Thomas Carter, son of Alexander and Anna Carter. Thomas Carter married Nancy Newton, and they raised six sons and two daughters. His sons names were Alexander and Robert Newton ? and Henry Newton and Jesse Humphries and John Rufus and Thomas. The girls names were Sarah Hart and Elizabeth Minskip.

Alexander married Mary Ledsinger and they raised three sons and six daughters. These boys names were John Ledsinger, Thomas Alexander and George Newton. John left now children and Thomas Alexander raised three sons and one daughter. His sons names were Newton of Zion Switch, Charles of McLemoresville and Thomas who died. His girl is Mrs. Minnie Jim Leach of the Fifth District.

George Newton left two, Sam Carter of Jackson, Tennessee, and Della Carter Robinson. She is dead. Alexander's were girls. (I will give their names and names of their husbands). The oldest was Nancy Newton, James Ward; Emily, William Jenkins; Malissa, Dr. Allen; Sarah, Robert Moore; Mary, Charlie Wilcox. I can't tell much about these, they all moved to Arkansas over fifty years ago, all of them are dead. His youngest girl Virginia married Sam Williams of near McLemoresville. She and her husband both died when young.

Now I will tell you about Robert Carter's family. He married Elizabeth Ledsinger and the raised four sons and three daughters. Mary his oldest married Ralph McKinney, they raised twelve children, three sons and nine daughters. John Calvin, James Robert and William Huston, all of McLemoresville. James Robert is dead. His girls are Elizabeth Catherine, married Robert Williamson; Rutha Louise, married William Hailey. He died and left two sons, John of McLemoresville and William of Huntingdon. She then married Hickman Drummonds and had two sons and five daughters. Emma married Ruben Carter of Huntingdon. She raised three sons and four daughters. Amanda Jane married James Burns of Lavinia. She is dead and left no children. Mary Margaret married Green Giles and left three sons and one daughter. Harriet A. married Hack Harper, had one girl and one boy, both dead.  Frona Married M. L. Williamson. They had no children. Susan married James Bramley. They have two sons, Dorsey and Adrian. Martha married Henry Graves. They have three children, all boys. Rutha Elizabeth married Jackson Bell. I can't tell anything about them, they moved to Weakley County. Their oldest son was named Marion, the next James. They had girls, Emma and Lizzie.

Harriet Carter married John Cannon. They raised two children, Robert Cannon of near Atwood and Ada, married Haywood Vawter, Harriet the mother lives with them. They live at Cages Switch.
